E is for Everybody

On May 1st, a brave cohort of bookworms competed in a whimsical tournament of wits at Monday Coffee in North Lawndale, fundraising for Chicago Public Library Foundation.

The Society for Visual Education, 1970.

Meet Our Spellers

Thank you, Chudi, Tomi, Esther, Maryah, Adora, Kaday, Arudi and Sam (Left to Right; 1st Row, 2nd Row).

This charming lot made it so easy to root for them and were great sportspeople in every regard.

Our Final Three (Kaday, Adora and Chudi) won the following prizes from local businesses:

  • 2 Guest Spots to DJ Ca$h Era’s Honey R&B Rooftop Party, a sold-out soiree at Three Top Lounge.

  • A $75 Gift Card to Kinnanm Sculpture - sculpted candles inspired by African mask-making traditions.

  • A $30 Gift Card to Unabridged Bookstore - Chicago’s premier small bookstore for LGBTQ+ literature.

Get to know a bit more about our spellers! Before the competition, they shared their current reads and reasons for loving our public libraries.

We want to thank our beneficiary, Chicago Public Library Foundation, for representing our libraries at the spelling bee. PG Friends, Marissa & Natalie briefly presented about the Foundation’s work supporting library programs not otherwise covered by city taxes.

They also brought along two goodie bags full of books won by two lucky audience members in spelling bee bingo. Due to our enthusiastic turn-out (standing room only was crazy!), we were able to donate $400 to CPL Foundation. We may just have to make this one a signature gathering.

Let us know what you thought of the event and check out our Gallery for more snaps of the night by Jameka DeLaine.

Why our spellers love the Chicago Public Library…

Thank You!

See you next time! <3
